Ablepharus kitaibelii

The Snake-eyed skink’s range extends from a narrow strip of land between Slovakia and Hungary southwards, through the Balkan Peninsula (Croatia, S. Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, F.Y.R.O.M. and Albania) to Greece (on many Aegean and Ionian iIslands), as well as western and central Turkey. The species inhabits mainly dry areas covered with maquis, meadows, and phrygana in woodland clearings. It usually hides inside leaf litter and thick vegetation, as well as under stones or dead wood.
